It is hardly surprising, therefore, that all this could harm our collective attention. A recent analysis of social media content found that the rate at which the popularity of items rises and drops has accelerated. In a period of three years, for example, the popularity duration (持续时间) of a topic on social media decreased from an average of 17.5 hours to 11.9 hours. More competition leads to shorter collective attention intervals, which lead to ever-increasing competition for our attention.
To regain control, we need cognitive strategies (策略) that help us regain at least some independence and protect us from the traps (陷阱) and information disorders of today’s attention economy.
The textbook cognitive strategy is critical (批判性) thinking. But it is not enough. The digital world contains more information than the world’s libraries combined. Much of it comes from unconfirmed sources and is of doubtful trustworthiness. Critically thinking through all the information and sources we come across would completely disable us. Moreover, applying critical thinking to sources that should have been ignored in the first place means that those seeking our attention have been gifted what they wanted.
So, we argue that as much as we need critical thinking, we also need critical ignoring. Critical ignoring is more than just not paying attention — it’s about practicing mindful and healthy habits in the face of information overload. Without it, we will drown in a sea of information that is, at best, distracting and, at worst, misleading and harmful.
