Known lovingly as “Dr. Tree”, Jim Chi-yung, an expert of Geography and Environmental Science at the Education University of Hong Kong, stands out as a champion of Hong Kong’s green heritage (遗产). His pioneering work in forestry has helped change the city’s skyline into a greener, more sustainable (可持续的) space, offering models for other cities struggling for environmental challenges.
In September this year, a ranking by Standford University named Jim the world’s leading forestry scientist, out of more than 35,000 researchers, who has spent the past forty-plus years protecting and creating many natural areas in the most unexpected places.
Jim’s efforts are particularly obvious in his protection of “champion trees” — ancient species that form the backbone of Hong Kong’s green heritage. Many of these trees, such as the centuryold camphor trees on Haiphong Road, were threatened during the city’s growth and storms, Fortunately, Jim came to their rescue with his knowledge. “Champion trees are important to Hong Kong’s natural and cultural identity, and cannot be left unattended,” Jim says. His efforts also led to the creation of a government list for ancient trees. For more than ten years, Jim has been taking the lead in shaping government plans that protect these natural historical sites.
Perhaps the most recent and productive part of Jim’s work is his focus on green rooftop project. Unlike traditional green roofs that often depend on grass, Jim includes native trees to create biodiverse (生物多样的) spaces. Jim has designed more than 20 green rooftops in Hong Kong, including projects for the University of Hong Kong. “These green spaces help cut energy costs, improve air quality, and support biodiversity, which in turn helps cities adapt to climate change,” said Jim.
At 71, Jim is still doing work that is as valuable as ever. His current projects include improving the micro-climates in Hong Kong’s tiny apartments, where many families with less money live. “The city’s environment is not just about trees, but about the quality of life in cities, particularly in areas where the environment has been damaged by rapid development,” he says.
