In the 1960s the Stanford psychologist Walter Mischel devised a way to measure self-control in four-year-olds. He left the preschoolers alone in a room with a plate of marshmallows (棉花糖) and a challenge: they could eat one marshmallow right away, or wait until the adult returned and eat two. In the following decades, he noticed the four-year-olds who had waited for the two marshmallows did better at school and were less likely to take drugs or end up in jail. He believed self-control, the ability to delay gratification (满足感), was the key to success.
More recently, however, psychologists have challenged his findings. Mischel’s original studies followed fewer than 90 children, all of whom were enrolled in the same nursery. Once you start studying bigger and more diverse groups, a different pattern emerges: it is wealthier children who are better able to resist the marshmallow. That’s partly because they are more likely to trust they will get two marshmallows if they wait. It’s also because our ability to resist temptation is shaped by our environment in complex and under-recognised ways. Basically, we’re not fully in control of our self-control.
Environmental influence isn’t just about childhood. Consider weight loss. About half of adults in the UK try to lose weight, and the chances are that they’re fighting a losing battle. But expanding waistlines in much of the world don’t reflect a collective loss of discipline so much as the consequences of the modern western diet, sedentary lifestyles and the rise in processed foods that are designed to hijack your panies know the secrets to making junk food “hyperpalatable” and we’re overeating when food is so soft that it barely needs chewing.
A. An announcement post. B. A school newsletter.
C. A job advertisement. D. A subscription plan.

Chineses architecture has long been thought to put style above function. A series of quiet but remarkable buildings in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, have slowly changed that impression. Behind them is Chinese architect Liu Jiakun, the winner of the 2025 Pritzker Architecture Prize. He is the second architect from China to receive this highest honor for the profession, following Wang Shu in 2012.
Since 1999, Liu has been working in the Yulin area, one of Chengdu’s most native and lively neighborhoods. In his spare time, the architect often goes grocery shopping or eats noodles at a tiny restaurant near his office. These experiences have given Liu an understanding of what the locals truly need in terms of architecture. For example, inspired by Chengdu’s basin geographical feature, his West Village (西村大院) project is a five-story building surrounded by elevated running tracks. The building provides large, mixed-use spaces for residents nearby. It has also become a lifestyle landmark, attracting social media users.
Liu’s passion for regional cultures is not limited to Chengdu, and he applies his design principles to various projects. The Suzhou Museum of Imperial Kiln Brick (苏州御窑金砖博物馆) is Liu’s project in Jiangsu Province. To protect the local imperial kiln heritage, the architect made changes as small as possible to the original ruins. Like many of his works, the museum seems humble at first sight. But when you look closely at its main structure, you’ll notice an aesthetic (美学的) combination of kiln and palace architectural features. The design shows a deep respect for both the environment and local culture.
Liu, in addition to being an architect, also wrote novels. By the end of the last century, he had published several of them. His talent and passion for literature have inspired him to explore architectural practices that use books as a tool to advance rural revitalization (乡村振兴). A village bookstore designed by Liu in Qujing, Yunnan Province, is set to open in May. Covering 800 square meters, the bookstore taps into the potential of cultural spaces in rural settings.
